Valles Caldera Fly Fishing Clinics for 2012

Youth clinics: May 26, June 23, July 21, August 18, and September 22 [link] Volunteers from New Mexico Trout conduct fly fishing clinics for youths, allowing up to 20 participants the opportunity to fish the headwaters of the East Fork of the Jemez River on the Preserve. Participants spend a half day learning about equipment, tackle, knots, stream insect sampling and identification. They will have time to practice their casting in the morning and then head for the fishing hole in the afternoon. Bring a lunch to enjoy along the stream and be prepared for weather. This activity is extremely popular, so sign up early. This clinic is designed for youths, ages 8 – 16 years. Parents are asked to drop youths off and come back at the end of the day. What to Bring and Expect:

  • Lunch, Drinks, Snacks – Plenty of Water/Fluids
  • Fly rod, reel, and tackle if you have them… if not, we will provide some for you
  • Numerous flies: 2-3 each
    • Grasshopper/Size 10 or 12
    • Parachute Adams/Size 14 or 16
    • Caddis (Elk hair or black foam)/Size 14
    • BH Prince or BH Pheasant Tail or BH Gold Ribbed Hares Ear/Size 14
  • Long Sleeve Shirt and Long Pants
  • Comfortable, sturdy foot wear
  • Hat, polarized sunglasses, SUNSCREEN
  • Jacket or sweatshirt
  • Backpack, buttpack, or vest
  • Raingear
  • Insect repellent

ALL persons 12 years or older, while fishing in New Mexico, must have on their person a current New Mexico fishing license. Anglers 11 years of age and younger do not need a fishing license. Resident anglers 70 years of age and older need a Free Fishing License available at any Department office or license vendor.

Due to concerns for wildlife, NO PETS, other than assistance dogs will be permitted on the Preserve.

Where to Go: The main entrance to the Valles Caldera National Preserve is located between mile marker 39 and 40 between Jemez Springs and Los Alamos along State Highway 4. Enter at main gate and proceed down dirt road approximately 2 miles to staging area. Please check in at the visitor center. New Mexico Trout instructors will take participants to the Bunkhouse where the clinic will take place. No pets, other than registered assistance dogs are permitted on the Preserve. Please do not plan on leaving pets in vehicles at parking lot. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to event to avoid delaying fellow participants. Late arrivals run the risk of being left behind.
