Youth clinics: May 26, June 23, July 21, August 18, and September 22 [link] Volunteers from New Mexico Trout conduct fly fishing clinics for youths, allowing up to 20 participants the opportunity to fish the headwaters of the East Fork of the Jemez River on the Preserve. Participants spend a half day learning about equipment, tackle, knots, stream insect sampling and identification. They will have time to practice their casting in the morning and then head for the fishing hole in the afternoon. Bring a lunch to enjoy along the stream and be prepared for weather. A screening of "Red Gold", an Award Winning documentary on the threat to Alaska's last wild salmon fishery, will be held in Albuquerque on 9 Feb. The film will be followed by a tasting at Scalo's restaurant, featuring Bristol Bay wild salmon expertly prepared by one of Albuquerque's best chefs. The cost is $10 and includes the movie and salmon tasting. The film will be shown at the Guild Cinema, 3405 Central Avenue at 6:30PM. The tasting will follow at Scalo Restaurant, 3500 Central Avenue. The Valles Caldera Trust recently released their report to Congress, outlining its activities and progress in the management of the natural preserve. In spite of the devastating Las Conchas fire which limited access to the much of the areas in the preserve and forced cancellation of many events/activities, the Valles Caldera saw a 13% increase in visitation, and a 10.8% increase in overall revenue. Of particular interest to NMT is the report of a significant loss of the fish populations in some of the area creeks. Ron Loehman, Conservation Chair Working Group Meeting: In November I attended a meeting of the Rio Grande Cutthroat Working Group. They meet quarterly to bring together representatives of public agencies and private organizations and who, by their mission statement, are "committed to improving the security of Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout (RGCT) in their historic range... to preserve the fish for present and future generations". January 10, 2012 7:30 Sandia Prep- Commons Room Harry Lane will be giving a presentation on "Hooking, Playing, Landing, and Handling Big Fish on Light Terminal Tackle. The presentation will last approximately 45 minutes and Harry needs a volunteer to be "The Big Fish". Harry Lane has been a guide on the San Juan for many years and has taken 18 groups to Mexico and Belize for saltwater fishing for tarpon, bonefish and permit.
